Howrah Bridge is a balanced cantilever bridge over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. Commissioned in 1943.

The other bridges are the Vidyasagar Setu (popularly called the Second Hooghly Bridge), the Vivekananda Setu and the newly built Nivedita Setu
The third-longest cantilever bridge at the time of its construction, the Howrah Bridge is currently the sixth-longest bridge of its type in the world.
The bridge does not have nuts and bolts, but was formed by riveting the whole structure.
The real name of Howrah Bridge was the New Howrah Bridge, at the time it was built. This is because, before it was commissioned in 1943, it was a simple pontoon bridge. In fact, the first ever mode of transportation that was used on the bridge was a solitary tram. Trams were banned on the bridge in 1993 due to increasing vehicular traffic on the bridge.
